How To Make A Halloween Candle Cake

Baking the Cake
Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line 5-inch cake pans with parchment paper circles at the bottom.
Mix Dry Ingredients: In a small bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
Cream Butter and Sugar: In a larger bowl, use an electric mixer to beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes.
Add Eggs and Vanilla: Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well between each addition. Then, add the vanilla extract.
Combine Ingredients: Alternate adding the dry ingredients and buttermilk to the butter mixture, starting and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix just until combined.
Pour and Bake: Divide the batter evenly among the prepared pans. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Cool the Cakes: Allow the cake layers to cool completely on a wire rack before decorating.
Making the Vanilla Buttercream
Whip Butter and Sugar: In a stand mixer with the whisk attachment or using an electric mixer, combine the butter and confectioner’s sugar. Add the vanilla extract.
Add Cream: Slowly add the heavy cream, one tablespoon at a time, until the buttercream is light, fluffy, and creamy.
Assembling the Cake
Layer the Cake: Place the first cake layer on a cake stand or board. Spread a layer of buttercream frosting, followed by a spoonful of strawberry jam and a drizzle of red-dyed caramel sauce. Repeat for the remaining layers.
Chill if Needed: If the cake gets too warm, refrigerate it briefly to keep it stable.
Ice the Cake: Cover the entire cake with the remaining buttercream, ensuring it is straight and level.
Create the Candle Effect: Make a slight indent in the center of the cake with a warm spoon. Insert a small birthday candle in the center, leaving the wick exposed.
Making the Candle “Wax” Decoration
Melt Candy Melts: In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the candy melts and coconut oil in 30-second intervals, stirring between each until smooth.
Pipe the Wax Drips: Place the melted candy melts in a piping bag. Spread a layer on top of the cake and pipe drips down the sides. For a layered effect, let the candy melts set before adding more layers.
Set and Enjoy: Allow the candy melts to set, then light the candle and enjoy your spooky Halloween Candle Cake!

Tips for Assembling Cake Layers

Level Layers: Ensure each cake layer is level before stacking. You can use a serrated knife to trim any domed tops.
Chill for Stability: Chilling the cake in the refrigerator for 10-15 minutes between layers can help keep it stable and easier to handle.
Use a Cake Board: Assembling the cake on a cake board makes it easier to transfer and decorate.

How to Store a Halloween Candle Cake

Refrigeration: Store the cake in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
Freezing: You can freeze the cake layers (without filling and frosting) for up to 2 months. Wrap each layer in plastic wrap and aluminum foil before freezing.

Recipe Alternatives

Different Fillings: Try other fillings like chocolate ganache, lemon curd, or raspberry jam for variety.
Buttercream Flavors: Experiment with different buttercream flavors like chocolate, coffee, or almond.
Decorative Toppings: Add Halloween-themed sprinkles, edible glitter, or colored frosting for extra flair.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups flour

  • 2 tsp. baking powder

  • 1/2 tsp. salt

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened

  • 2 cups sugar

  • 4 eggs, room temperature

  • 3 tsp. vanilla extract

  • 1 cup buttermilk, room temperature

  • Filling
  • 1 1/2 cups strawberry jam

  • 1/2 cup caramel sauce

  • 2-3 red food gel

  • Vanilla Buttercream
  • 1 1/2 cups unsalted butter, room temperature

  • 5 cups confectioner’s sugar

  • 2 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract

  • 4-5 heavy whipping cream, room temperature

  • Candle “Wax” Decoration
  • 1 cup white candy melts

  • 1-2 Tbsp. coconut oil

Directions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and grease then line 5″ cake pans with a parchment paper circle at the bottom. This recipe makes 3-4 layers depending on the size pan you use.
  • In a small bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  • In a separate, larger bowl, use an electric mixer to beat the butter and and sugar until it is light and fluffy. Mix for 3-5 minutes or until the mixture has lightened in color and is fluffy.
  • Add in the eggs one at a time mixing between each addition. Add in the vanilla.
  • Beginning and ending with the dry ingredients alternate adding in the dry ingredients and buttermilk. Mixing a little bit between each addition.
  • Do not over-mix the batter, use a silicone spatula to ensure that everything is combined nicely and evenly.
  • Pour the batter evenly into your prepared pans or divide the batter evenly and bake each layer separately.
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown on the edges and a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  • Allow each layer to cool completely before decorating.
  • Vanilla Buttercream
  • To make the buttercream, use a stand mixer fit with the whisk attachment or an electric mixer and combine the butter, confectioner’s sugar, and vanilla while slowly adding in one tablespoon of heavy cream at a time. Mix until the mixture becomes light and fluffy and creamy.
  • Assembling The Cake
  • Once the cakes are fully cooled, place one layer down on the cake stand or a cake board. Layer the cake with buttercream frosting then a spoonful or two of jam and then a drizzle of red-dyed caramel sauce.
  • Repeat these steps until all of the layers are used up. Place the cake in the fridge if it starts to get too warm. A colder cake will be more stable.
  • Ice the outside of the cake with the remaining buttercream doing your best to keep the cake straight and level.
  • Once the entire cake is iced, use a warm spoon to create a slight indent in the center of the cake then stick a small birthday candle in the center with the wick out to make the center of our candle cake wick.
  • Lastly, melt the candy melts and coconut oil in 30-second intervals mixing between each time until the candy melts are completely smooth and melted. Place this in a piping bag. Spread the candy melts ontop of the cake then use the piping bag to slowly let more candy melts drip down the sides of the cake. For a realistic, layered effect, pipe one layer of candy melts down the side of the cake at a time, letting the candy melts set before piping the next layer to make it look like wax drippings.
  • Allow the candy melts to set then light and enjoy!
