Halloween Potion Bottle Sugar Cookies

I used to love making this kind of cookie around Christmas time and making them into “Snowglobe Cookies” with snow sprinkles in the center. Then the idea dawned on me to bring these cookies to life for Halloween and create these Halloween Potion Bottle Sugar Cookies. The cookies are super tender and sweet, and the center is crushed hard candy, which makes for such a fun and unique twist. Finally, the royal icing to help glue the cookies together as well as decorate the tops of the cookies ties everything together so perfectly for the Halloween season. I hope that you all enjoy this Halloween Cookie recipe as much as I do!

How To Make Halloween Potion Bottle Sugar Cookies

  • Make the Dough:
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and baking powder. In a stand mixer, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy (about 2 minutes). Add the egg and vanilla, mixing until well combined.
  • Combine:
Add dry ingredients to the wet and mix until the dough begins to pull away from the sides of the bowl. Flatten the dough into a disc between parchment paper, roll to 1/8″ thick, and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight.
  • Cut & Shape:
Once chilled, preheat oven to 375°F. Cut out potion bottle shapes. Use a small 2” circle cutter to remove the center of each cookie.
  • Add Candy Centers:
Crush the Jolly Ranchers and spoon 1–2 teaspoons into each cookie center. Don’t overfill—the candy will spread when melted.
A hand fills potion bottle-shaped cookie dough with crushed colorful candy on a baking sheet. A blue potion bottle and classic horror books, including "Frankenstein" and "Dracula", are in the background.
  • Bake:
Bake for 8–10 minutes until the edges are golden. Let them cool on the tray until the candy centers harden, then transfer to a rack.
  • Decorate:
While cookies cool, make royal icing. Mix powdered sugar and meringue powder, then slowly add water to reach piping consistency. Add food dye to desired portions and place into piping bags. Decorate half the cookies however you like!
  • Assemble & Fill:
Once cookies are cool, place 1 tsp of sprinkles in the center of an undecorated cookie. Pipe royal icing “glue” around the edge and top with a decorated cookie. Press gently to seal.

How to Store Halloween Potion Bottle Sugar Cookies

  • Room Temperature: Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
  • Longer Storage: For best freshness, store in the fridge (especially if filled with soft candy or sprinkles).
  • Freezing Tip: Undecorated cookies freeze well for up to 3 months. Freeze them flat, then thaw and decorate when ready.

Recipe Tips

  • Chill the dough well to prevent spreading—this is crucial for the potion bottle shapes. This dough is also so much easier to work with while it’s chilled, so that the cookies hold their shape perfectly rather than smudging or bending while transferring it to a cookie sheet.
  • Use gel food coloring for vivid, rich icing colors without altering the consistency.
  • Don’t skip the parchment paper—it helps prevent the melted candy from sticking to your pan.
  • Keep icing covered when not in use to prevent it from drying out in the piping bags.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1/4 tsp. salt

  • 1/4 tsp. baking powder

  • 1/2 cup butter

  • 1/2 cup sugar

  • 1 egg, room temperature

  • 2 tsp. vanilla extract

  • 1/3 cup crushed Jolly Ranchers (I used mostly clear pineapple flavored Jolly Ranchers with a mix of a few colors in there, but you can use whatever colors you wish!)

  • 2 Tbsp. Halloween Sprinkles

  • Royal Icing
  • 2 cups confectioner’s sugar

  • 1 tsp. meringue powder

  • 1-2 Tbsp. water

  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract

  • food dye

Directions

  • In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and baking powder. Set aside.
  • In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream together the butter and the sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy and creamy. About 2 minutes. Be sure to scrape down the sides of the bowl as you mix.
  • Add in the egg and vanilla. Continue to mix and scrape down the sides of the bowl to ensure that everything is combining evenly.
  • Add the dry ingredients to the wet and mix until a nice, soft dough forms and starts to pull away from the sides of the bowl. Scrape down the sides of the bowl, and let the dough mix a few seconds longer to ensure that everything has been combining evenly.
  • Transfer the dough to parchment paper and flatten it into a disc. Place another piece of parchment paper on top of the dough and roll it rough to about 1/8″ thickness.
  • Place the rolled out dough on a cookie sheet and transfer to the fridge for at least 2 hours or overnight.
  • Once the dough has chilled, preheat the oven to 375 degrees F and line two cookie sheets with parchment paper. Set aside
  • Next, use a 4″ potion bottle cookie cutter to cut out as many shapes as you can. I used three different potion bottle shapes by tracing and cutting them out by hand. You can find potion bottle cookie cutters on Amazon to make this step easier.
  • Use a small 2″ circle cookie cutter to cut the center out of each of the potion bottles. Each bottle will need the center taken out.
  • Place the Jolly Ranchers in a large ziplock bag and use a mallet to crush the candy into very small pieces.
  • Spoon about 1-2 teaspoons of crushed candy in the center of each cookie. The candy will bubble and spread, so be careful not to overfill the center to avoid the candy from bubbling over.
  • Bake the cookies for 8-10 minutes or until the edges of the cookies are golden brown.
  • Allow the cookies to set on the pan for about 10 minutes or until the candy center is hardened, then transfer to a cooling rack. Allow the cookies to cool completely before decorating.
  • While the cookies cool, you can prepare the royal icing. Mix together the confectioner’s sugar and meringue powder with a whisk in a medium-sized bowl. Add the water one tablespoon at a time. A little water goes a long way, so add a few drops at a time and more if needed to reach your desired consistency.
  • Place a heaping spoonful of icing in a piping bag. This will be used to seal the cookies together later on. Dye the remaining icing whatever colors you want for decorating. Place all of your colors in piping bags and decorate half of the cookies however you want.
  • Once the cookies have cooled completely, spoon about 1 teaspoon of sprinkles in the center of the undecorated cookies. Use the uncolored icing to pipe icing on top of the perimeter of the cookie to act as a “glue” to seal the cookies together. Place a decorated cookie on top of the “glue” immediately before it dries out. Repeat these steps until all of the cookies are assembled and decorated.
  • Enjoy!!

  1. These look great. Do they store well? 5-7days? And also can you freeze, imagine might not be possible with the layers?
