How To Make Earwax Cupcakes

Making these cupcakes is easier than it looks, and most of the steps can be done ahead of time! You can also feel free to use any cupcake flavor for the base; in this recipe, I use vanilla cupcakes.

  • Bake the vanilla cupcakes – The base of this recipe is a fluffy, moist vanilla cupcake made with buttermilk for extra tenderness.
  • Whip up the chocolate buttercream – Light, creamy, and chocolatey, it pairs perfectly with the spooky decorations. I also feel that the chocolate buttercream has a nice offsetting color contrast against the candy ears and Q-tips.

  • Make the candy ears – Candy melts are piped into an ear mold, then dusted with cocoa powder for realistic dimension. If you can’t find light brown candy melts, feel free to use a combination of white and semi-sweet chocolate to reach a desired shade.
  • Assemble the edible Q-tips – Marshmallows and candy cigarettes dipped in melted caramel create the ultimate earwax effect.
  • Decorate and serve – Pipe buttercream on each cupcake, then top with a candy ear and an earwax Q-tip.

How to store Halloween Earwax Cupcakes

Store decorated Halloween Earwax Cupcakes in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. The buttercream will stay creamy, and the candy decorations will hold their shape. For the best flavor and texture, let the cupcakes sit at room temperature for 15–20 minutes before serving.
If you want to make them ahead of time, you can bake the cupcakes up to 2 days in advance and store them unfrosted. Assemble and decorate the day you plan to serve for the freshest look.

Recipe Tips

  • Room temperature ingredients – Always use room temperature eggs, butter, and buttermilk for a smoother batter.
  • Don’t overmix – Overmixing can cause dense cupcakes. Mix until just combined.
  • Chill the candy decorations – Let the candy ears and Q-tips fully set before placing them on the cupcakes.
  • Use a large piping tip – A star tip creates bakery-style buttercream swirls.
  • Be generous with the caramel – A little drip goes a long way in making the Q-tips look realistic (and gross).

Halloween Earwax Cupcakes Recipe Alternatives

  • Flavor swaps – Use chocolate or pumpkin cupcakes as the base.
  • Buttercream variations – Vanilla or cream cheese frosting would also work great.
  • Decoration swaps – Instead of ears, add gummy worms or candy eyeballs for another gross-out effect.

Ingredients | Vanilla Cupcakes

  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 tsp. baking powder

  • 1/2 tsp. Salt

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature

  • 1 cup sugar

  • 2 eggs, room temperature

  • 2 1/2 tsp. vanilla

  • 1/2 cup buttermilk, room temperature

  • Chocolate Buttercream
  • 3/4 cups unsalted butter, softened to room temperature

  • 4 cups confectioner’s sugar

  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 3 -4Tbsp. heavy whipping cream

  • 2 tsp. vanilla extract

  • 1/4 tsp. salt

  • Candy Ears
  • 1 cup light brown candy melts

  • 1 tsp. cocoa powder

  • Candy Q-Tips
  • 12 -15 candy cigarettes

  • 24 -30 mini marshmallows

  • 1/4 cup caramel squares (I use Kraft)

Directions

  • Starting with the vanilla cupcakes, preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and line a cupcake pan with parchment liners. Set aside.
  • In a small bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  • In a separate, larger bowl, use an electric mixer to beat the butter and sugar until it is light and fluffy. Mix for 3-5 minutes or until the mixture has lightened in color and is fluffy.
  • Add in the eggs one at a time, mixing between each addition. Add in the vanilla.
  • Beginning and ending with the dry ingredients, alternate adding in the dry ingredients and buttermilk. Mixing a little bit between each addition.
  • Do not over-mix the batter; use a silicone spatula to ensure that everything is combined nicely and evenly.
  • Scoop and fill the cupcakes to fill the liners and fill them about 3/4 of the way.
  • Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown and a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  • Allow them to cool completely before decorating.
  • Chocolate Buttercream
  • To make the buttercream, use a stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment or an electric mixer and combine the butter, confectioner’s sugar, cocoa powder, and vanilla while slowly adding in one tablespoon of heavy cream at a time. Mix until the mixture becomes light and fluffy, and creamy.
  • Add the salt. Scrape down the bottom and sides of the bowl to ensure everything is combining evenly. Place the buttercream in a piping bag fitted with a large star tip. Set aside.
  • Candy Ears
  • To make the candy ears, start by melting the candy melts in 30-second intervals, mixing between each time. Once the candy melts are nice and smooth, place it into a piping bag.
  • One at a time, pipe the candy melts into the ear mold. I got my mold from Amazon, find it here! Fill each mold, then place in the fridge to set completely.
  • After about 15 minutes, once the candy melts have set completely, pop them out of the mold. Use a small brush dipped in cocoa powder to brush on the ears to add some detail and dimension. Set these aside in the fridge until we use them later on.
  • Candy Q-Tips
  • Gently place a mini marshmallow on both ends of the candy cigarettes. Repeat this step for each one.
  • Once the Q-tips are all assembled, melt the caramel squares in 30-second intervals until completely melted. One at a time, dip each marshmallow end of the Q-tip in caramel. Place the dipped Q-tips onto a cookie sheet fitted with parchment paper. Repeat these steps for each one.
  • Assembling Halloween Earwax Cupcakes
  • Pipe a swirl of chocolate buttercream on each cupcake, then top each one with a candy ear and a candy Q-tip. Get creative and have fun with the decorating process!
  • Enjoy!
