How To Make Easter Sugar Cookies
I’ve made this sugar cookie recipe soooo many times, and they kinda remind me of a Crumbl-style cookie because of their thickness and just overall size, but of course, the taste is so much better because they’re homemade and made with common household baking ingredients.
- Make the sugar cookies
- This is a typical, classic sugar cookie recipe. The balls of dough are larger than normal, but as I mentioned before, they are like a crumbl-style cookie, so they are large in size, which makes their texture delicious and cakey. Let the cookies cool completely before decorating!
- Crush up one or two of the cookies after baking and add some food gel, and combine completely. This is going to mimic grass when we decorate later on.
- Make the buttercream
- using room temperature ingredients is key so that the buttercream comes together nicely and with no lumps. I use Americolor food gel to dye my buttercream. A little bit of this food dye goes a long way to give you have beautiful colors without the taste of food dye.
- Make candy melt carrots
- Melt down green and orange candy melts in 30-second intervals until completely melted and pipe into the carrot molds. CLICK HERE for the link to the candy melts!
- Decorate
- Time to bring everything together!! My favorite part :) Frost your cookies, dip them in crushed cookies, add candy melt carrots, and dust with cocoa powder.

Tips for decorating easter sugar cookies
- Chill your candy melts slightly before piping if they’re too runny
- Use a piping bag for cleaner, more defined frosting instead of spreading
- Don’t overbake the cookies! These cookies have such a soft and cakey texture, and not overbaking them helps to prevent them from getting a harder texture.
- Press the center immediately after baking, while the cookies are still warm
- Mix different shades of green for a more natural grass look :)
How to store Frosted Easter Sugar Cookies
- Store decorated cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days
- If stacking, place parchment paper between layers to protect the frosting
- You can refrigerate them for up to 5 days, but let them come to room temp before serving for the best texture
- Unfrosted cookies can be frozen for up to 2 months
